It all started with Legos. As a kid it was houses. Later it was designing skyscrapers stretching to the ceiling.
I dabbled in art at school, but it was by accident that an art career ever developed. I have always loved architecture, history and exploring new places. The three came together several years ago after a trip around the world. While working for a model train manufacturer, I began sculpting small house facades, the results- Brian Baker’s Déjà vu Collection and later the Brian Baker Collection.
Recently I’ve turned to two dimensional works to express the same love of the outdoors, history, and architecture. I love to delve into our nation’s history and scenic variety as much as I can. This love has also taken me to some forty countries; I am intrigued by how different cultures express themselves in architecture, art and design. Though my mediums are now scratchboard drawing and oil painting. I am very pleased to have this opportunity to share all these divergent inspirations with you.
Now about that “accident”… I had just returned from a six month trip around the world. I took the first job I could find which turned out to be as exciting as spraying paint into flat molds for model train parts. To keep awake I would dream of all the wonders I had visited. In Paris I had seen paintings which brought out the character of the local buildings. Why not, I thought, make a mold like the very ones I was working with and make a few Christmas presents? I created a little French hotel from some clay and made my mold. Everyone loved it, including the owner of the company. After making a few more, my collection debuted at the San Francisco Gift Show. We had created a sensation, and the rest as they say, is history. Right place. Right time. Now I share my dreams with scratchboard and oil. Who knew?
And it all started with Legos.
